Student Spotlight: Nate Dorman
Your SCVCS classmates are involved in all sorts of exciting things!! Nate Dorman is one of those students. He is a surfer, and recently surfed in the Eastern Surfing Association's, "The Easterns, Best of the East" Championships. You can read an article that photo journalist, Brent Kredel, wrote about Nate and all the excitement during his most recent competition below. Way to go, Nate!!
Nate is a Good Young Man
"I will be posting some photos in a moment but before I do, I want to give a background story. I will feature one surfer in the next album of photos (I have never done this before) b/c he motivated me to work late this evening & to get done what must be done. He is a young man of 17. His name is Nate Dorman. He is an exceptional surfer, an extremely intelligent young man & an all around good person, in my own judgment, whatever that's worth.
You see, Nate loves to surf and has high ambitions for this calling...Nate drove himself up to Nags Head from Myrtle Beach alone, a five hour drive, he "crashed" at a local friends house in Kitty Hawk and was going to do whatever it took to take part in "The Eastern's", the best of the east (and Barbados) surf competition via the ESA. The other evening, Monday, his car broke down and "blew a gasket" so to speak, with end result being that it was not worth it to fix...the car that he had for one year was going to go to the dreaded junk yard. Inevitably, he missed Tuesday morning and early afternoon surf sessions b/c he was stranded in Kitty Hawk, and, of course he needed to prepare himself, by surfing, to compete with the east coast's best surfers. Thinking he might be a bit upset, I spoke with him and he was cool, mellow but eager to surf. He sort of laughed off & never let this incident with the car to break his focus, nor his spirit. He knew he would get to Nags Head and Jennette Pier in some manner. He never seemed worried to me.
He went with the flow as most surfers do with a postive and right attitude. He shook it off, not knowing how he would get to the event, where he would stay and how he would traverse the 5 hour trip back home to Myrtle Beach and his family...keep in mind he's 17 year's old, I remember being that age....! Nate was unflappable and knew that things would work a way out and of course they did, he got to Nags Head Jennette Pier, found a new place to sleep & a ride home with all of the belongings he had to capture from a car that had accumulated things much in the fashion of a museum....Nate has gotten 1st place in two heats that I know of...and is moving toward a collision course with the best from the east...he's on a roll and the photos of him in the aqua blue jersey in my next segment attest to the fact of his attitude, determination, drive, will, focus, right mindedness & what was stated in the film "Heartbreak Ridge" (which I spoke about with 2 friends on the pier yesterday-Wednesday), Improvise, adapt & overcome is what I belive Sgt. Gunny said (Clint Eastwood).
Well, Nate exhibited all of these qualities and because of this instead of sleeping a little extra I decided to give some extra effort and work harder to finish up some editing to showcase the surfing talent that we have on the east coast, more specifically, the Myrtle Beach-Grand Strand area (we all know that this area is not known for it's wave potential), anyway thanks Nate for the inspiration...See ya at sunrise or so!"
